I applied colored pastel chalks to weather the sails. Chalks are commonly used by military modelers to weather vehicles. The chalks are powdered by rubbing on an abrasive like sandpaper and applied to the model dry, with a paint brush. The sails were molded in a yellowish, off-white plastic. Rust red, brown and gray lent a nice used look and by applying the darker colors to what would normally be shadowed areas, I could emphasize the shape of the sails. A matte finish (I use Dulcote) is sprayed over the chalks to fix them and prevent smearing.
