I don't usually put sails on model ships because they seldom look very realistic and obscure the details of the rigging. But this model really had to have sails since they would make the model instantly recognizable as some sort of ship. Without sails, the nature of the model would take way too much explanation. It takes enough with the sails! Fortunately, I found a set of useable vacuform sails in the Lindberg Jolly Roger kit (a reissue of the La Flore kit, when Lindberg decided their historical ship models would sell better as pirate ships). I cut the top edges of the two square sails at an angle to give them more of a lateen look. The jib and spanker were used with no modification.
