The German fighter pulled into a vertical climb and streaked into the sky just like the rocket ship it was. In seconds, it blasted past the slower jet fighter and whipped around for an attack run.

"What the hell!" Chuck twisted his head, looking through the Plexiglas bubble canopy for what ever had just whistled by him. Then he spotted it. The teardrop fuselage, swept swings and lack of horizontal tail identified it as a Messerschmitt 263, the improved Komet rocket fighter. The original Me 163 was not very successful. Their limited endurance kept them from doing much harm to the bomber formations that were their target, and their tendency to explode on either take off or landing had killed more of their pilots than enemy fire. But the 263 had fixed most of those problems. A cruise engine doubled the 163's time in the air and wheeled landing gear gave the pilot a decent chance of surviving a landing. And some bright Nazi had the idea of fitting a War Wheel with a catapult launched Me 263 to make a land-based aircraft carrier.
