The machine gun slugs and the blast of his jet engine had rattled the War Wheel's crew awake, anyway. The guns mounted on its hub blazed away and filled the sky above the rolling death machine with black puffs of flak. They were too late, though. The P-80 was already flying out of range. Because he was flying away from the War Wheel, Chuck did not see the hatches open in the top portion of its hub. A small, tailless airplane catapulted from the huge war machine, propelled by a white-hot rocket engine.
