Like the sails, figures were also important to set the scene. Because the Martians were supposed to be a good head taller than Earthmen, I used HO scale (1/87) figures as the base for the conversions. The figures were inexpensive, unpainted moldings by Atlas of civilians in a variety of poses, intended to populate a modern railway station. I began by carving off all the clothing and then reclothing them in Martian costumes made from .005" plastic sheet.
