Zipang is unusual for an anime in that all the characters are adults and they are faced with tough questions in a realistic environment. One of the things contributing to the sense of realism is the fidelity with which the ships and other hardware are depicted. The Mirai is a modified Kongo class Aegis destroyer and it is reproduced in the series with great accuracy and detail.
