In the original novel (by Tom Clancy) it is explained that the Red October is a highly modified Typhoon class ballistic missile submarine. The vessel was lengthened both to include additional missile launch tubes and an experimental magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) drive. Referred to by the Russians as a "caterpillar drive", the experimental drive provided nearly silent propulsion at high speeds.
