Despite my reservations, a 1/16 scale diorama of a 19th century whaling hunt by Bruce Knisely really impressed me. It showed a fully manned whaleboat closing fast on a sperm whale. Only the top of the cetacean's back was visible. The harpooneer had his weapon ready and was taking aim. I had just finished a major modeling project and wanted to do something for fun, not competition. I decided to brazenly copy Knisely's composition, but where his was large and scratchbuilt, mine would be small and use as many parts off the shelf as possible. There would be one other difference. My diorama would depict the most famous characters in whaling lore, Captain Ahab and Moby Dick.
