The diorama depicts a scene from midway in the novel. The main characters of the story have been kidnapped by hideous aliens and taken to the aliens' base on the planet Pluto. The "good" alien blows up the base, shattering the airlock doors, but is frozen by the near absolute zero temperatures of Pluto because she has no space suit. The human hero, Kip, dons his space suit and goes out to complete the task of planting a beacon that will bring help.
