My primary modeling interests are science fiction and 18th and 19th century warships. Naturally, I found the combination of the two in Space: 1889 irresistible. The background created for the game contains many potential modeling subjects but, for me, the choice was easy. Featured prominently on the game box and the cover of the rule book is a Royal Navy "Aphid" class gunboat, shown streaking across the Martian sky while under attack by savage flying tribesmen. The references contain several illustrations of this class, including two different sets of two view plans, and a description of the vessels' development and specifications. Unfortunately, hardly any of this information is consistent. I drew a set of plans, combining the best features of the illustrations and information in the game materials with my knowledge of Victorian naval methods. The result is clearly recognizable as an "Aphid" - class gunboat.
