I wanted something on the base to give a quick impression of the huge size of the shuttle. A friend gave me a small (1/288) war-gaming piece, a cast resin tank (I don't remember which tank but it looks like it might be a German Leopard). I replaced the turret with a very small clear dome (heat formed over the round head of a sewing pin) for the crew of the vehicle. And I added a boom with a sphere behind the dome. It could be many things but I imagine it is transporting nuclear fuel to the ship.
