Thick white craft paint disguised the smooth straight rod and made it resemble a smoke trail. The end of the brass rod was glued into a hole drilled in the starboard Harpoon launcher. White cotton "smoke" covers the launcher and part of the side of the ship. In an actual missile firing. the smoke cloud would be large enough to cover most of the side of the ship, but it was reduced to enough to show a missile had been fired without covering up too much of the model.
