Antares Dawn cover

Antares Dawn was published in 1986. The first book of a trilogy by Michael McCollum, it tells the story of a human colony on Alta that has been isolated from the rest of humanity for more than a century by the star Antares going supernova (which disrupted the "fold" lines used for FTL travel). The story opens with the appearance of a powerful ship on the fringes of the system. The Altan Space Navy Ship Discovery is sent to investigate. The book's cover art is by Don Dixon.
