Profiles of the Blackhawks' Grumman F5F-1 Skyrockets

Dark blue fuselage and engine nacelles with red wings and tail. Military Comics #42, September 1945. This illustration shows a white stripe which was the most common depiction, but this color scheme was sometimes shown with a yellow stripe (see Military #35 for an example). Silver or aluminum fuselage and engine nacelles with red wings and tail. Modern Comics #47, March 1946. For a higher resolution (17K) picture, click here. The cover illustration of Modern Comics #66 shows a Blackhawk emblem on the port wing of the Skyrocket (I assume there is an emblem on the starboard wing also, but it is cut off in the illustration). Other issues do show emblems on both wings (see Military #23 for an example). But in the majority of the illustrations, there are no emblems on the wings. As with the profile above, both white and yellow stripes were used.

Black fuselage and engine nacelles with red wings and tail. Blackhawk #258, May 1983. For a higher resolution (17K) picture, click here.

Silver or aluminum fuselage and engine nacelles with red wings and tail. Blackhawk #261, August 1983. Although this emblem was used consistently in the Evanier/Spiegle revival of Blackhawk, which is why #261 is listed as the reference, a nearly identical emblem did appear in the Golden Age Blackhawks also. See Military #23 for an example. As with the profile above, a yellow stripe was most common, but this marking scheme did occasionally have a white stripe. Overall silver or aluminum. Blood & Iron, Book One of Howard Chaykin's Blackhawk mini-series, 1987.
More on the use of the F5F-1 Skyrocket in Chaykin's timeline can be found HERE. For a higher resolution (16K) picture, click here.

Overall silver or aluminum. Blackhawk #12, March 1990. For a higher resolution (16K) picture, click here.
(Note: The cover of #12 shows red stripes on the fuselage and nacelles, but the interior illustrations are as shown here.)

I get the best results by inserting the graphic file into a MS Word document (TIF into Word Ver 6.0 or earlier, GIF into Word Ver 7.0 or later). Change the size of the image (not the document) to 31% to print a decal for a 1/72 scale model or to 47% to print a decal for a 1/48 scale model. If you do not have access to MS Word, then use what ever program you have to print the image so that the stripe is 3.5" long for 1/72 scale or 5.3" long for 1/48 scale. I highly recommend printing the image in B&W on plain paper and then checking its fit on the model before printing on the decal sheet.
