Issue No. 263

October 1983

Only One Survives!: Stan leads the team against the War Wheel in Spain (we have to wait till Issue No. 269 to find out why the Germans would attack Spain when it was a technically neutral country that sympathized with Germany). Hendy manages to stop the War Wheel by shooting off an antenna, but while they are rescuing Stan and Chuck from quicksand, it disappears into thin air again. Meanwhile, Blackhawk has tracked Domino to Marrakech. They fight but both are captured by bounty hunters. The rest of the team discovers that the War Wheel really did vanish into the air, lifted by dirigibles. They shoot down the dirigibles, but the War Wheel survives the crash. It rolls to destroy the British embassy in the same Spanish town where the story began (this probably should have been consulate, since the embassy would be in Madrid). Stan leads the Wheel into the quicksand pit and it sinks until it's immobilized and its crew surrenders. Blackhawk and Domino work together to escape. Once clear of their captors, Domino gets the drop on Blackhawk. She tries to overcome her programming but as she hears the rest of the team approaching, pulls the trigger. It doesn't fire and she says the gun is empty. From a distance, the team sees Domino holding a gun on Blackhawk. Sharpshooter Hendrickson kills her with a single shot. Blackhawk seems torn and Hendy asks if he did the right thing. Blackhawks assures him he did. When Olaf picks up her gun, it fires. Then Blackhawk knows that she had a change of heart and that he may have lost a woman he could have loved. (an excellent story, wraps up the arc nicely. A fantastic cover featuring both Domino and the War Wheel by comic great, Gil Kane)
