Issue No. 164

September 1961

Note that this is one of the few covers to show the Blackhawks' aircraft. Anyone who has read the comics from this period knows that the color schemes of the planes varies from story to story. Sometimes they have red wings and red bands around the fuselage where the emblem is, and sometimes they don't. This cover manages to have it both ways. If you look closely, you will see that the airplane about to be destroyed has one red wing and one white wing! Now, to the stories.

The Deadly Distortion Ray: A scientist is driven mad by failure and uses his invention to commit crimes and distort the shapes of the Blackhawks. He comes to his senses when his beautiful daughter is endangered by his crimes.

The Blackhawk Baby Sitters: The team accepts the job of protecting the young Prince Sigmund of Belgovia from enemies who want to prevent him from becoming king.

Origin of the Blackhawks: Text page with thumbnail portraits tells origin of the Black Knights. This is nearly identical to the origin page published in No. 93, rewritten slightly to eliminate the anticommunist rhetoric in the earlier appearance and with updated thumbnail portraits.

The Twin Creatures of Blackhawk Island: A crashed space ship releases two huge creatures who rampage across Blackhawk Island. They turn out to be alien princes under a sorcerers spell.
