The Nachthexen - Night Witches - sobriquet came from the German soldiers whose sleep they constantly interrupted by their bombing raids. The small bombs carried by the biplanes didn't kill or injure a lot of Germans, but the pure randomness of the attacks was enough to keep many of the soldiers from sleeping, and tired soldiers don't fight well. But this night their mission was not random harassment. Their target was specific and vital to the future of the Motherland. Ten groups of three aircraft lifted from the grass strips of the 46th's fields and headed west into the night sky. Left behind on the dark field, two much larger and much faster B-26 bombers waited, each crewed by three impatient Blackhawks. The Marauders would take off after a delay calculated to put them over the Nazi base immediately after the Night Witches attack. The seventh Blackhawk was once again at the controls of a Po-2. He flew the third plane in Major Litvyak's attack group. There was no opportunity for fancy acrobatics, this time. The Soviet aircraft hugged the ground and spread out on varied flight paths that would reconverge on the rocket base. Blackhawk allowed himself to enjoy the pleasure of seat-of-the-pants flying, but he was always aware of the mission.
