August 1956

The Super Race: The Blackhawks fly to Madagascar to search for a missing American looking for a replacement supply of tungsten. They arrive just in time to rescue a white woman from the natives (note that "white woman" is in bold letters in the comic book, emphasizing the racism in the situation). She is the wife of the missing explorer, who they discover int he hands of a former Nazi named General Von Kummel. Von Kummel has assumed leadership of a technologically advanced race called the Deros. The Deros have lived underground for millenia because they hate everyone else. Their super race attitude fits perfectly with Von Kummel's Nazism. Of course, in a fierce fist fight the Black Knights overcome the bad guys, rescue the American and destroy the underground city.

Fighter for Freedom: A non-Blackhawk story, a photographer convinces a fighter pilot to take him for a ride so he can get some combat pictures. He talks about how the pictures are the most important thing in his life, but when they are shot down over Communist territory, he uses the film as a fuse to destroy an enemy fuel dump.

The Man Who Stole Tomorrow: After a victory by Freelandia over its warlike neighbor, Volandia, the peace treaty directs that Volandia will turn its arms factories to peaceful purposes. It seems to do so, but at an exposition of its new products, the giant vacuum cleaner turns out to be a dangerous menace. The Blackhawks discover the remote control for the giant appliance and save the day. I couldn't help thinking of all of Batman's adventures with giant gimmicks while reading this story.

The Menace from the Skies!: In an early foray into science fiction, the Blackhawks are testing an experimental spaceship when they encounter another ship piloted by aliens. They are taken to an asteroid where a single genius controls the life of a domed city. But the great brain is suffering from radiation poisoning and the city is dying. The Blackhawks find and capture the culprit responsible and the city is saved.
