Issue No. 23
February 1949They Bar the Path of Oppression - Believing a violent uprising will be staged, a small country's leaders request the aid of the Blackhawks. But the underground movement, spearheaded by a man named Boorn, has made plans to deal with the Hawks. Divide and Conquer is his scheme and when he uses the beautiful woman called Doria, Boorn's plans go as predicted. With a tiny unknown flaw he neglected to see, Boorn's uprising is soon aborted.
The Gila - Perhaps one of the most ludicrous stories ever written (for Quality). (If you thought the outer space/Blackhawk stories stunk, wait'll you read this one) A college professor (specializing in electronics) has hidden bombs throughout the world and threatens to explode them, one by one, unless he is made "the new ruler of the universe" (there was a previous one??). He's dressed in an alligator outfit, complete with red cape, and holds one of his college students prisoner, to help him because of her superior knowledge of electronics. The Hawks discover his lair, he brags to them his plan, they fight, the Hawks win, end of story. The sooner we move on, the better.
8 page Chop-Chop story
2 page Blackhawk text story: "Piracy, Modern Style"
Piracy - This more than makes up for the Gila story. The perfect story-art combination. A cargo ship, the Lamont Brown, is attacked, looted, and sunk by winged pirates. A lone survivor is rescued by Chuck and flown to safety, where no one, save Chuck, believes the sailor's story of flying men. Chuck introduces him to the Hawks and they arrange to sail out and investigate. They make alterations on another cargo ship and set sail. They are attacked by the same winged pirates but gain the advantage by launching their planes from the altered deck of the ship. The Hawks follow the fleeing pirates back to their headquarters, a submersible island, hosted by their leader, Cap'n Harpy. After a desperate struggle, the Hawks gain the upper hand and overpower Harpy as he intentionally tries to sink his island. Harpy is captured and turned over to U.S. authorities, whose ships he was sinking.
