This cover is one of my favorites by Chaykin. Though I admired it, I never thought much about it until the illustration on the left above was brought to my attention (Mikel Midnight tells me that Tony Gleeson first made the connection). The picture is by a famous artist of the early decades of last century, J. C. Leyendecker (1874-1951) . I have not identified this particular illustration, but it appears to be typical of the magazine advertisements he did for Arrow Shirts in the 1920's. A side by side comparison leaves no doubt that Chaykin copied this picture for the cover of the third volume of Blood and Iron. I don't have any problem with that. Artists often imitate other artists' work as an homage, and certainly this is one of the great Blackhawk covers. We just need to thank Leyendecker as well as Chaykin.
